In Maranhão, northeastern part of Brazil, we call roselle 'vinagreira' (vinagre = vinegar). We also turn the leaves into a paste (cuxá) and cook it with rice (arroz) and dried shrimp: arroz de cuxá, one of our local dishes.

Are there different varieties of roselle? My flowers were on a small plant and huge but my brother's plants were taller and flowers smaller. Mine was very strong but his was weak. Was it due to the size? the weather? the kind of plant? I want to learn more but not much out there.

I have grown these from Baker Creek 2 years now, and we use it in jellys, a tea mixed with orange and pineapple juice for homemade red fruit punch, i make hair rinses and soaps, and the tea is added to our kombucha as well. We a lik so eat the greens cooked in soup and in salads/on sandwhiches

With all due respect Imho the term 'edible-ornamental' is oxymoronic.

Roselle takes a surprising long time to flower. It flowers in short days. Even in my zone 9b area, the pods didn't mature in time. Okra, a closely related plant, produced well on the other hand.

Is this plant, Roselle, the same as Sweet Shrub and/or North Carolina Strawberry? Sure looks the same. If so, it's not exactly uncommon in zone 7 of the US. the video would have been more informative had it included common local names.
